1. Introduction & background

The Association of British Climbing Walls (ABC) is the trade association for indoor climbing in the UK. It is an industry going through major change with new climbing walls opening all the time, and the sport featuring at the Olympics in 2020. In response, the ABC is accelerating the development of its organisation and the offer it provides to members.

Understanding the indoor climbing market is one area where we can help the industry plan more effectively and lobby for funds from Government to support development of the sport. At present we cannot say with confidence how many people, and what type of people, are climbing indoors. As a consequence we believe we are underplaying the major contribution that indoor climbing is making to the health and well-being of the nation, as well as its economic benefits.

2. Objective of the commission

We require support from an independent and authoritative source to determine the market size of indoor climbing in the UK.

3. More detailed requirements

In particular, the ABC would like to know:

1) The number of people who climb indoors in the UK each year, broken down on a range of demographics;
2) The frequency with which this population is climbing;
3) The financial market size of indoor climbing. Clearly this is made up of many parts so a breakdown of spend type is required;
4) Projections about future market growth over the next 3-5 years;

Additionally we would like:

5) An easy to use and repeatable methodology for calculating the above information on a regular basis, at little or no cost. This is likely to be quantitative in nature.
6) Advice on how to develop and sustain this research so it can be easily updated on a regular basis.

We may elect to include other metrics or questions too, and we would be interested to hear of experience from other markets to inform this.

It is important to know that gathering data from individual climbing wall businesses may be challenging, as some view this as giving commercially sensitive information away. Therefore, in your response, you must give consideration to how you will demonstrate independence and credibility with this audience. Also, how your methodology will mitigate any risk posed by partial data from this source.

4. Starting position; what we already know

We are not starting from scratch and the successful bidder will be provided with a range of sources to support the study. These include a participation database held by the ABC, reports from the BMC and Sport England, as well as recent analysis carried out by independent industry observers.

5. Project management

This work is to start ASAP, and must be completed by Friday 15th September. This is because the output will be presented at the industry annual conference in late September. The successful bidder may be invited to present.

We expect a comprehensive written report, ongoing methodology, and supporting databases / analysis. The ABC will retain ownership of the methodology, and any databases or intellectual property created as part of this commission.

The supplier should plan to check in with ABC Chief Executive on progress every two weeks throughout the project.

6. How to apply

Please provide a proposal which contains:

- Your approach to the project and the value you can bring (40% weighting)
- Credentials and experience of similar work. It is likely that this experience will be primarily in quantitative market research (40%)
- Pricing (20%)

Proposals should be no more than 10 sides. We may invite shortlisted providers to a meeting to discuss your proposal. They will be evaluated on the basis of the above weighting.

Our budget for this piece of work is between £3,000 & £5,000.

If you would like to discuss this opportunity, please contact us.
