If you don't consume you will die, but you will die anyway

I came across a quote about how being happy and content is the best way to push against being a consumer, with how everything is sold in the spirit of things making us happier once we've bought them.

If we can be happy with our immaterial lives, the need to consume can be reduced (allowing for having to wear clothes etc).

Another question can be - do some people produce more than they consume?

Very good point. However, not with the advent of AI, or introduction of robotics over the next 20 years......

Are you a fan of Iain M Banks or just a techno optimist?

Can you explain what you actually mean here, or the discussion you wish to provoke. Or are you going to join that noble group of posters who knock some randomly selected words into a sentence and run away

All you are is a debtor. The bright shiny stuff you buy is just the bait. Debt is your real work.

Isn’t anyone who isn’t at least 110% self sufficient – a consumer?

AI, promising so much for so long and delivering what?
Huge processing structures delivering marginal intelligence. 20 years may be enough time to see a significant improvement but until there is a major advance in the underlying technology, they are still just proof of concept models.

And then there is true Machine Intelligence – 100’s of years away perhaps, unless the new technologies really do offer something orders of magnitude above what we have now.

In reply to The Ice Doctor: if you get something for free you're not the customer; you're the product.
