The procedure for throwing a rope down is:

Look, shout, throw.

Not:

Throw, shout, look to see who you hit!

Shouting is rude .... Look,... If appropriate ask politely,... Throw if everyone agrees.

Actually, this is exactly the sequence of steps if you are intending to hit them in the face. The secret is in the timing.

You missed out step 4: "kick microwave sized block to within a couple of metres of another party" as happened to me at Clogwyn Cyrau today...

Couldn't agree more. Happened to me last week.

I rember once checking to see if there was a party below, noting a pair way off the line, dropping the rope and then being admonished for not shouting 'below'.

No pleasing some people

9 times out of 10, the correct thing is to lower the rope rather than throw it.

How about flake it into a poly bag ? kept in a pocket - and clip it to the descender on a sling - works a treat when there are loads of snags like saplings sticking out all over the place - or sea water for the rope to land in - just put a knot in the ropes so you know if the end is coming up.
