Are Goldfinches less susceptible to the European finch infection than other finches? Are they hardier?
I used to see more Greenfinches and Chaffinches in my garden, but now it is almost solely Goldfinches.

In reply to veteye: Apparently greenfinches have been particularly decimated. I am not in the UK and the greenfinch is/was our dominant finch along with the house sparrow, but there do seem fewer.

I apologise - I suspect they're all in my ancient, enormous, lichen-infested rowan tree in NW Scotland. Shall I send them south again?

Sorry for slow reply. I'm on call and had a couple of cases to deal with.
I have loads of sparrows-like an extended family in a fairly open bush near to my kitchen. They seem to be thriving now.

In reply to Footloose:

Certainly you should keep a good few as producers to bring the numbers up, but send a modest number south.

Nevertheless I heard the Nightingale in the evening yesterday. I have not had one for a couple of years.
