Just wondering if anyone knows if there is any decent patches around the Idwal area suitable for three people to bivvy on?

Flat.... I think is the only requirement, but a nice view is always great.

Don't mind a walk in from sleeping spot.

(I am aware of the laws, rules, do's and don'ts with wild camping have been doing it for 15 years in with little issue)

The only 'Australia' I know is in the slate quarries. You mean Llyn Bochlwyd?

You could always just bivvy on a stance 2 or 3 pitches up:

There's a big boulder with a dry howff big enough for three underneath it. However, describing which one is like describing which piece of hay conceals the needle in the haystack. Still, looking for it should fill an idle evening. The entrance is below knee level and about two feet wide.

We bivvied on the opposite side of the lake, right by the water's edge on a flat grassy bit. Close to footpath was the only downside but it was only one night.

Bear in mind that Cwm Idwal is a National Nature Reserve and is also a designated SSSI.
Somewhere outside the Cwm might raise fewer eyebrows.
