Saw them in Bristol last night, having caught the end of their set at last year's WOMAD festival.

Flippin' marvellous. Anyone else a fan? Two sax players, two trombonists, two trumpeters, two percussion players and one sousaphone player making a bloody wonderful jazz noise. Highly recommended.

Out of curiosity, was there ever a colliery in Hackney?
In reply to FactorXXX:

No. Named more for them being a brass band than because they were routinely covered in coal dust, I think.

Damn good though. Terrific cover of Nirvana's 'Heart-Shaped Box', amongst other things youtube.com/watch?v=Y-MD1KL9tPg&

Around Shoreditch the 'groomed lumberjack' look is inexorably giving way to overalls, ingrained dirt and pneumoconiosis

Except, of course, that they're not. At least not in the traditional British sense of Brass (/colliery) Banding. They're more like a New Orleans style Jazz band with an ironic hipster name.

Having said that, the 'Hackney' Sousaphone player from your clip used to sit next to me (playing EEb Bass Tuba) at 'Aveley and Newham Band', which IS a traditional Brass Band despite being from the South and not having a single member that owns a whippet or a flat cap.
