Play it loud

Tonight was a Neil Young night. Dug out the old CDs and played my favourite tracks from them, initially through a Bluetooth speaker but later in respect to Mrs Ratty's sensibilities through headphones. Powderfinger, Cortez, Eldorado, Over & Over then Greendale complete.
Something struck me as I indulged myself - it had to be loud, background was not an option.
What is it about some music that it has most impact when it is felt as well as heard. Any ideas?
In reply to keith-ratcliffe:

It's a long way from Harvest and After the Gold Rush to Rust Never Sleeps and Ragged Glory.
I can't think of anyone except Bowie who has pushed the genre envelope so far and so brilliantly.
From a selfish point of view, no Neil Young, no Grunge, and so no Nirvana or Soundgarden. Furthermore a truly grumpy guitar hoodlum. Bless!
