Hi, im a runner that does a bit of scrambling and climbing.
I have plenty of rucksacks and i can run with them but fancy a race vest so that i can take a bit more kit than in a running bum bag but have it a bit more snug than a rucsack.
Ideally something that would take an axe would be good and some form of helmet carrying if possible. Space for crampons and a spare layer inside or for summer then waterproofs, insulated jacket and trousers would be great.
Advice from anyone that has or has used anything good would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried looking at Skimo race packs/vests?

Dynafit, CAMP, Ski Trab, Crazy Idea all do something in the 8-20l size range and most have somewhere to store an ice axe, some have crampon pockets which you can access without taking the pack off. All super lightweight and ideal for running with.

I have the Dynafit RC 20 and have used it for both running and Skimo races, the Race pro is smaller and maybe more what you are looking for?

Not perfect but you could do some ghetto modifications the treking pole attachment to suit an axe. Crampons can be bungied to the outside (assuming you mean proper crampons). You get 11L for storage -2 if you have a bladder. Not the most but will fit a compressed midlayer and ultralight waterproofs no problem. Only issue is where to put the helmet... Your head?

The Grivel mountain runner or Salomon Skin Pro 15 could also be worth a look as they have a similar design.

I've been using the Ultimate Direction AK for ultras and scrambling routes. Plenty of storage space, lots of little pockets and loops for an axe/poles.

It fits well and doesn't bounce around. The soft bottles are also a big plus.

Thanks for the replies. All very useful...tho i do have craigdon vouchers so the nathan is tempting!
Not even sure if anyone has a vest that stows a helmet...ideally i dont want to wear it all day if its not needed.

Look at the Ultimate Direction Fastpacks... rucksacks in 'race vest' form. They go down to a 15-litre now. I've got UD SJ Ultra Vest 2.0 (7 litres), Fastpack 20 and Fastpack 30, and use the Fastpacks more than the SJ (the 20 the most, though I like the 30 best in some ways).
