We just had one (called a general election). People voted to weaken their hand so we'll just have to live with it if we get a crap deal.

Not sure why people see referendum's as such taxing affairs. It's a postal ballot or visit to a nearby polling booth for half an hour on the rare occasion they are held. We complain about the apathy of the youth, but it seems adults aren't that much better.
