Just found some more:

I would climb a mountain
Wouldn't want to see you fall
Rock climb for you
And give you a reason for it all

In reply to LeeWood:

I can move, move, move any mountain.
I can move, move, move any mountain.

The Shamen.

In reply to LeeWood:

They say every man must need protection
They say every man must fall
Yet I swear I see my reflection
Some place so high above the wall

Bob Dylan - I shall be released

I sometimes find myself singing the first two lines in my head as I am about to place a piece of gear.

In and around the lake.
Mountains come out of the sky and they stand there.

Graham Parker: Protection -

Just can't get, just can't get no protection
Just can't get, just can't get no protection
Just can't get, just can't get no can't get no protection
Protection, protection

In reply to LeeWood:

"There's a chapel deep in a valley
For travelling strangers in distress
It's nestled among the ghosts of the pines
Under the shadow of a precipice

When a lonesome climbing figure
Slips and loses grip
Tumbles into a crevice
To his icy mountain crypt"

From a song that anyone who witnessed Harold and Madge's wedding on Neighbours, will have heard!

In reply to LeeWood:

Before you jump
You wear the frown
Of someone who is stalling
There's no up there's only down
In the void of falling

All you need to do is take
One step into the sky
Give yourself to gravity
Give death another try
In free fall, free fall

Hawkwind / Hawklords "Freefall"

Indeed, I used to listen to it all the time when I did my parachute and paragliding training.

In reply to LeeWood:

Fingers crimped like distorted vices Man on the mountain better hold his nerve
Twisted sinews reveal a tiger Man on the mountain better hold his nerve
The rattle and clank of elements for survival Man on the mountain better hold his nerve
Fear it seems is our only rival Man on the mountain better hold his nerve
etc....etc
Verse 1 of my song "Man on the Mountain"

In reply to LeeWood:

"You say the hill's too steep to climb
Chiding!
You say you'd like to see me try
Climbing!
You pick the place and I'll choose the time
And I'll climb
The hill in my own way
just wait a while, for the right day
And as I rise above the treeline and the clouds
I look down hear the sound of the things you said today"

Fearless - Pink Floyd

On a cheery note, when folk ask me what I'd choose for my funeral music this would probably be it, for more than just the obvious reason. Not that I see myself as fearless, far from it.

With the birds I'll share this lonely view. - RHCP

That always reminds me of climbing.

In reply to LeeWood:

I'm the man on the silver mountain
I'm the man on the silver mountain
I'm the day, I'm the day
I can show you the way
And look I'm right beside you
I'm the night, I'm the night
I'm the dark and the light
With eyes that see inside you
Come down with fire
Lift my spirit higher
Someone's screaming my name
Come and make me holy again
 Big Ger 03 Jul 2017
In reply to LeeWood:

In the heat and the rain
With whips and chains
Just to see him fly
Too many die
We build a tower of stone
With our flesh and bone
To see him fly
But we don't know why
Ooh, now where do we go

All eyes see the figure of the wizard
As he climbs to the top of the world
No sound, as he falls instead of rising
Time standing still, then there's blood on the sand

Oh I see his face!
Where was your star?
Was it far, was it far
When did we leave?
We believed, we believed, we believed

What about the Beatles' ode to redpointing?:

Don't let me down,
Don't let me down,
Don't let me down,
Don't let me down.

In reply to LeeWood:

Nothing's so purile as meter and rhyme when you can't see the ground from that ledge and this perch is so far, far from the nest.
Gravity doesn't grant me the privilege of failure my bough never breaks
I don't stumble into anything
so I climb and I carve my initials in the bark with that feather I found but its all so contrived...

In reply to LeeWood:

The Country Gentlemen - Matterhorn

We started out from Bern one sunny August morn
There was just the four of us against the Matterhorn
There was Albert the Australian and John the Irishman
Me and Bill from Britain, mad dogs in the sun

Matterhorn, Matterhorn
Men have tried and men have died to climb the Matterhorn
That mighty Matterhorn

Two miles up we lost John and our rations fell below
Now Al and Bill are lying beneath an avalanche of snow
Now here I am alone and I know I cannot stop
Two more yards in front of me before I reach the top

Now here I am a dying upon the Matterhorn
Not a thing for me to lie in or a thing to keep me warm
The Queen would surely knight me if I could get back down
But it's closer here to heaven than it is back to the ground

In reply to LeeWood:
When your lead is lonely, and you haven't got a friend,
Just remember that death is not the end,
When your last runner is a tied off blade, if you fall it will bend,
Just remember that death is not the end,
When you're dithering on a crux that you cannot comprehend,
Just remember that death is not the end,
When storm clouds soak the holds and you unexpectedly descend,
Just remember that death is not the end,
When there's no top rope to comfort you, no helping hand to lend
Just remember that death is not the end,
Not the end, not the end
Just remember, that death is not the end.

Nick Cave

In reply to LeeWood:

And I need all the gear I can get
And I need all the gear that I can't get too

There are parts of me that don't get nervous
Not the parts that shake
You'll only get what you insert
You'll get what you make
Starting to cry its no fun I'm off it
But I'm not done yet
Counterfeit ice screws from a molten down jet
Anything I can get

Andrew Eldritch
