About two or three years ago, somebody jumped from a tall building in Derby and died, and for a while beforehand some of the crowd below were goading him into it. It doesn't make it any nicer, but callousness seems to surface occasionally in people. So they might have 'just' stood and watched, and not had anything to do with it like pushing him in. Being mocked can have only added to his panic.
