Anyone been up (and more specifically down) the Marmolada recently? heading out there next weekend and hoping for a crack at the Don Quixote - does anyone know what the conditions are like on the descent? I imagine the state of the glacier is pretty variable... thanks

The glacier is very dry this year - it has been receeding at 5" per day! Very little snow this year. It looks as though there is a snow free ridge along much of the summit ridgeline.

Thanks - do you know what it's like under-foot? hard ice? soft? possible to descend without crampons?

In reply to ripper: some of that is from the underground city from the war but the rest is from the ski lift operator who just dumps stuff onto the mountain. And you cant be entirely responsible for global warming can you?
