Wilton Fest is happening again this Saturday. If the weather is sunny, we could have another turn out in the hundreds. Is this the biggest climbing festival in the UK? (Excluding events with a broader focus like Cliffhanger)

For those who haven't heard of it, there's a link here. Loads going on... https://www.thebmc.co.uk/wiltonfest-17

The concept of a "climbing festival" is a total anathema to me, and flies in the face of everything I hold dear about climbing and mountains ie a trip to a remote crag, ideally in the mountains, off the beaten track and with just one or two friends at most. I don't enjoy crowded crags and venues.

To me I think this is where the BMC has lost it's way. But I realise I'm in the minority, living in the past, and each to their own

Hope everyone who goes enjoys it.

You should come to the Guernsey festival next year - plenty of crags to go to as a single team, yet sociable things to do when you return to camp.

Well, all the local climbing festivals are organised by local climbers, and we support them where we can. So, it's local climbers happily losing their way and having a great time

Last year's WiltonFest was totally brilliant (despite torrential rain) and this year's is in aid of Climbers Against Cancer in memory of Lancashire legend Nick Bond.

There's heaps going on including FREE trad clinics with James McHaffie. Plus the BMC stand will be there with, rumour has it, lots of end-of-year bargains.

See you all there.

I love those remote experiences too. But I've got room in my life for climbing to be more than one thing.

The sun is shining, and I'm looking forward to seeing a few of my favourite places buzzing with life, excitement and shared passion.

Though I bet I'll still be the only one in 4.

Here we go...

I really don't think the BMC will have lost its way given that it found Wilton OK on all the other occasions

Being serious for a moment, isn't such a festival mainly organised by grass root activists exactly the sort of thing the BMC should support?.People can climb, do some cleaning, learn skills, buy climbing art and climbing books or just chat. I had really good fun in the rain there last year. Sadly, too busy preparing for an imminent Yosemite trip this weekend but best wishes to Nick's family and friends (he was Astley007 here):
