Hi,

Does anyone have a recommendation for accommodation in Kathmandu? We will only be there for two nights before heading out to trek, so basic, clean, trustworthy accommodation somewhere conveniently situated.

Thanks
Ian

Hi. Have stopped at Holy Lodge twice. That was mid 90's, so might be different. Crofty.

Taleju Boutique Hotel in Jyatha, Thamel is very good.

I liked the Courtyard Hotel - in Thamel but tucked away - a little oasis of peace amongst the craziness.

I just arrived at the airport about 20 years ago, stepped out and was surrounded by friendly locals wanting to help me. So I picked the one I liked the look of most, the rest lost interest, and he did a good job at looking after me, taking me to nice accommodation in Thamel.

Friendly locals/commission chasers

Just go wander round Thamel and take a look plenty to choose from

Sure, but i was pretty green when I arrived, and it suited me fine. If you were a regular you'd know your way around.

there's a wide range of quality and cost!

on my first few nights last time, I went to the Shambaling http://www.shambaling.com/ and for about £15-£20 a night, it puts any fancy hotel in the UK to shame. makes the hilton look like travelodge! quiet and out of the way too.

On the other end of the scale... I stayed in Hotel Florid in Thamel for £3 ish a night and very basic but close to everything.

There was another one which I can't remember atm but will find the card this evening. It was very good and about £7-8 a night.

If you go into thamel without a booking, you can really barter with the commission chasers. they are everywhere. but always look at the room before the handshake!

Kathmandu guest house is very swanky and for british prices its pretty good, but compared with surrounding hotels, as long as you dont need silver service, you can get a lot cheaper.

I stayed in here http://www.hotelganeshhimal.com/ this August. Let me keep my bag there whilst I went off trekking etc. Cost me $25/night.
