I've been reading some stuff about Ulva in the paper and saw a picture of some basalt columns on the coast. UKC database lists something of that ilk but no details. Can anyone offer any info?

I paddled around Ulva this summer, so only really saw the crags by the sea. Nothing amazing looking though I did think at the time if I was local I'd be definitely trying some new routes. Lots of stuff around 15m high but the rock quality looked variable. Specially on the south side of the island.

Now the Treshnish on the other hand....

cheers

Thanks for that. Much as I thought. It's just the picture of basalt columns looked quite appealing, like a mini Kilt Rock.

Cycled all over the island last year - which was great fun - but can't remember seeing much in the way of appealing rocks. Well worth a visit though - it's a lovely place, and my wife says the langoustines she had in the cafe were amazing

There is climbing on Ulva. Inner Hebrides guide page 112. And I think more recently by Colin Moody.

Thanks Andy. That's one Scottish guide I haven't yet purchased!

And if you like mini Kilt Rocks, you'll find plenty of them on Canna - in the same guide.

Interesting little thread.

Funnily enough I was there in May. It's a lovely island, well worth a visit, but I only had a quick look at the cliffs due to time constraints regarding the ferry. The crags I looked at were very modest in size; more of a mini mini mini Kilt Rock, but reasonably extensive despite not being very high. Definitely climbable though IMHO - and if I didn't live so far away, I'd be going back.

I did some very brief research and there's some coverage in the SMC's 2014 Inner Hebrides & Arran guide.

This is on Ulva's Nose Bleeding Wall: https://i.pinimg.com/736x/88/ea/3f/88ea3fd6008513eff4ed0b65d0be84de--isle-o...
and this is somewhere else on Ulva: https://scontent-lga3-1.cdninstagram.com/t51.2885-15/e35/20759122_186806025...

Colin Moody, who I believe lives on Mull and is co-author of the SMC guide, would be the best point of contact though: Colin Moody

By the looks of things that's on the south side of the island, and maybe only a mile or two from the ferry

You'll go past it on this walk - http://www.isleofulva.com/livingstones-cave-walk/ - but it's not one of the bits where I cycled

There are half a dozen routes there in the Inner Hebrides guide, there are now about 30 short routes. The climbing is not like Kilt, there are lots of face holds, some holds look like they might snap but protection in cracks is good. The cliff faces south and dries quickly.

Thanks for all replies.
