I have a few days work in Munich coming up and wondered if anyone could recommend a wall in Munich, I will be staying near Ottobrun but will also have a few hours to kill on return flight day, so anything near the airport also. I should have a hire car. Bouldering and/or auto belays. TIA.

Been here before - http://www.kbthalkirchen.de

Friendly staff and you can hire everything you need.

No autobelays though, and the bouldering is a bit limited. I'm generally there on Wednesday evenings & would be happy to do a few routes. Not this week though.

Alternatively boulderwelt tends to be very busy on weekday evenings, but is big & has pretty good routesetting: https://www.boulderwelt-muenchen-ost.de/

In fact I only know one wall in Bavaria that has (a few) autobelays, and it's quite a way out of town: http://www.kletterz.de/

Thalkirchen was good when I went a few years ago. You could look at Heaven's Gate https://www.kletternmachtspass.de/ for something different - old grain silos 28m high. I've not climbed there, but apparently a 60m rope may not be long enough for some lines, and it can be hard to hear your partner when one of you is at the top.
There's a DAV wall at Gilching too http://www.kbgilching.de/ It's not as big as Thalkirchen and is 'out of town', but easily accessed on the S-bahn. Expect to pay about 10-16 euros to use the DAV walls, you can hire ropes too (can't remember if that was included in the 16 euros).
If you like machines, technology and engineering and have time off in the day go to the Deutschemuseum, it's excellent.

Heaven‘s Gate is currently closed for a major rebuild. And tbh, although the boulder setting there is ok, the lead routes in the silos are pretty horrible & only really of novelty value

I go to Munich a couple of times a year for work and normally goto BoulderWelt at OstBahnhof. As mentioned above it is pretty busy on week day evenings but it is big enough to acommodate them all.. if you can get there during the day its much quieter.

It's also well placed to visit enroute to the airport as its 3-4mins walk from Ostbahnhopf station and the S8 to the airport takes ~45mins from there

I agree with all that. Quite varied styles too with some neat balancy problems as well as the usual powerfest crimphauling.

Thanks for all the advice folks, will have a look at the sites (with the help of Google translate most likely!). Alan thanks for the offer but I think I will most likely be there on a Tuesday.

Out of interest does BoulderWelt have much of an induction procedure -forms/tests etc or more importantly can they do these in English?

At Boulderwelt you are unlikely to have any real language difficulties. Whenever I've been the staff all had better English than I have German (and I do have a little bit). There is at least a passing chance that there will be a British member of staff there during the week too.

The induction thing is forms (or was when I did it around three years ago). Similar to UK except that it was done on tablet at entry, not on paper. iirc it was German only but much is guessable and I'm sure you'd find staff or locals that would help if needed.

I joined at the Regensburg one and it was very straightforward, just personal details, no climbing questions as far as I recall. Staff speak perfect English.
