Hi,

Been to Rjukan and La Grave, both were great, Rjukan particularly. Can anyone recommend similarly accessible destinations in Europe? Hitting some of the below criteria would be useful:

- Easy to get to.
- Easy to travel between locations (roadside ice cragging ideal!).
- Good/existant guidebook.
- Reliable conditions.

Feel free to tell me off for being lazy but any pointers on the ideal lazy man's ice climbing venue much appreciated

I'd hardly call Cogne roadside cragging. I was doing some decent approaches times I remember. Cogne generally ticks the other boxes, although if there's avalanche risk then it can limit options.

In reply to Mr. Lee:

Cogne isn't roadside (apart from Cascade de Lillaz) but a lot of it has quite short walk ins.

There's a lot of craggy short approach stuff up Gudbrandsdalen north of Lillehammer. PDF guide is on the Lillehammer klatreklubb web page. Conditions very reliable. Couple of hours drive from the airport. Mainly WI3-4 though. Not much above.

I'm totally biased but it's between 3 and 20 minutes walk to the routes from the car park. Drop me a line if you want more info!

Not all that lazy, but pick the right routes and it could be.

Seconding Mike (Beardy)'s recommendation - do like Serrai di Sottoguda

That said I'm biased he had me out there to play, but did book straightaway to go back the next year.

In reply to Mr. Lee:

'Roadside cragging' was an 'ideal', & there's plenty to be had (eg the climbing below the road at Moline; Lillaz Gully itself & variants). There's also plenty of longer walk-ins, but many routes can be accessed within an hours fairly undemanding walking (& I am a lazy Peak District climber!!)

In reply to ArnoldTheBat:

Awesome, thanks again all. Probably Cogne this time, Serrai di Sottoguda next

In reply to ArnoldTheBat:

I'd second Cogne. I stayed a few times at La Barme, a really nice family run hotel in Valle d'Aosta. It was a while back but popular with ice climbers and seems to get v good reviews still.

This is a good base for the Ecrins; and the icefall.com link is useful for conditions.

Hi Tom,

There is a group of us (6-8 people) heading out to Oppdal from Gatwick on the 27th Dec-2nd Jan. We are looking to book a 12 bed house 30 mins for Oppdal. So there's plenty of room if you are looking for accommodation in the area. Let me know if you think you may be interested.

Cheers

Caroline
