As much as I despise the tabloid sleaze which he fed, until his conviction I had a soft spot for him as, aside from his hatred for the tories, he'd helped out a woman who'd been a contestant on a game show and had been outed as an ex-escort by the scum press. He'd contacted her and advised her how best to deal with it (for free) as it turned her life upside down (lost job, shunned by neighbours etc). There was a piece in the Guardian about it and he came out of it well. That said, I have it on first hand authority that he was a total and utter sociopath with an off the scale controlling personality disorder, so there you go.

Died in prison while serving a sentence for sex offences is not an epitaph anyone would want. Any thoughts go to his family.

Given subsequent events I can't help thinking he perhaps extracted payment from an ex-call girl in some way that wasn't financial. Even if it wasn't that there would have been an angle he was playing. They say there's no such thing as altruism. Certainly the case with Clifford.
