Are there recorded winter routes on the UK's highest mountain?

I just wondered if there's a chance of making a first ascent?

Congratulations to Mount Hope on its new elevation (10,654ft).

Yes a whole guidebook published by the SMC. Still new lines being put up.

Mount hope no idea, it’s not in the UK.

Mt Hope installed as 'UK's highest peak'
Britain has a new tallest mountain.
Mt Hope, which is sited in the part of the Antarctic claimed by the UK, was recently re-measured and found to tower above the previous title holder, Mt Jackson, by a good 50m (160ft).
Hope is now put at 3,239m (10,626ft); Jackson is 3,184m (10,446ft).

I don't think there is an SMC guide book to Mt Hope .... not yet!

No missed Chris Evan's show (definitely his show, even if he may not own it).

Antartica, however.....

I'd have thought that any BAS staff stationed nearby would have had a go in any spare moments

Presumably the BBC should have written something more along the lines of '…under UK stewardship'? Antarctica is out-of-bounds for sovereignty claims, I thought

To quote Damo on this thread:

https://www.ukclimbing.com/forums/t.php?n=675687

> "Mt Hope was first climbed in December 1964 by Mike Cousins and Keith Holmes from BAS, then got its second and third ascents in January 1970 by more BAS personnel."

There is a team out in the locality now. Maybe they could just squeeze one more route in

No rush, it's mid summer in the Southern Hemisphere.

It is not winter in Antarctica right now though.

No shit, Sherlock....

So define winter route by dates or conditions? This thread has spiralled up its own backside from the first post onwards, which even for ukc must be some kind of record!

In reply to ben b:

That's an excellent point, ben b.

Clearly it can not be a UK winter route if it is recorded outside the UK and outside the true winter of Dec 22 - March 21 (no doubt some pedantic almanacist will drop a note about more precise dates, but I can't be bothered to toss the argue.).

Which means that it would be impossible to climb Central Icefall on Craig y Rhaedr in Snowdonia on March 31st, wouldn't it? (In the UK, but not in winter....)

But the impossible actually happened.

In reply to Pay Attention:

Not impossible to climb it, you just can't claim a winter ascent. Sorry!
