Over the new year I dropped my car key between Swirls car park and the summit of Helvellyn via the top of Brown Cove Crags, once I came to terms with their disappearance I then had a 5 hour journey home involving 3 buses and 3 trains. Volvo !!! want to charge me £300 for a spare so if anyone happens to come across it while up there, many beer vouchers could be yours!

Can't point you to a specific website/company, but it is possible to get a car rekeyed for much less than the manufacturer would charge. Do some research and save yourself from the unnecessary charges.

I've had recent experience of losing a Volvo key, not being able to find the spare and with the car parked in an underground car park from which it couldn't be recovered. £400, and Volvo couldn't even deal with it as I couldn't get the car to them.

Turns out that modern Volvos are really quite secure, and it's impossible to program keys for them without the Volvo software and a live connection to their system.

I’ve done some shopping around and it’s difficult to get the price down very much, without wanting to rant on, it’s a scam that the manufacturers are all exploiting atm. They effectively tie you into their prices by locking you out of your own car, !

Is it a scam?
Or
Is it Volvo making sure that people can’t programme a key, while you sleep, and then steal your car?

Shopping around volvo dealers, or independent car key specialists?

I needed a new key for an 8y/o bmw a few years ago. BMW wanted £300+. I got it done for £60. This is assuming you have a driveable car with the spare key, and you haven't lost the only key...

Can you claim from car insurance or house insurance?

In reply to martinturner:
I don’t think the price is a factor that makes a key more or less difficult to copy Martin. The fact that they can hold your car hostage and charge what they like just when you need them most is disgraceful, the prices quoted by the manufacturers for replacement keys is extortion, and is effectively a ransom note, and doesn’t reflect the real cost of suppling a new key.

I was referring to the fact only Volvo can make the key.

Fair chance someone will find them and hand them in would have thought.

Ah yes I that’s a good point, which is fine so long as they don’t exploit the situation.

We hope!

Although it look like criminals don't really need the key as the manufacturers aren't using robust enough cryptography/protocols that outlast the life of the vehicle.

"The RAC obtained the figures from 40 police forces in England and Wales, which revealed that 85,688 vehicles were stolen last year - up 30% from 65,783 in 2013."

I know this is absolutely no use to you now, but these things are pretty good to have for when you do get new keys/car (whichever is cheaper!)

I hope they turn up.

Just on the off chance- I lost a set of VW keys while at a Commonwealth Games event at Hampden Park in 2014. Any chance you'll be in South Glasgow in the next while?

This is almost as good a tale as the 2 walkers that found the lost boxer dog on Ben Vane a few years back

In reply to scon:

I dropped a swatch on Helvellyn near the summit, some years ago.     A few years back, more than ten years after dropping the watch, I was talking to a stranger at an electronics car-boot near Newark and when I mentioned I lived in Cumbria he mentioned that he went hillwalking and mentioned Helvellyn.

At some point I mentioned losing the watch and he said "Funny that, I once found a watch right near the summit of Helvellyn....."

The following year I met him at the same event and he swung the watch in front of my face, complete with new battery!

A chance in 1000 million?
