Will be in chamonix on 27th Jan for 1 night, never been before, any recommendations for cheap hostel type accommodation?

Never been personally but heard good reports on this place. Plenty of reviews online.

the vagabond is ok although a bit of a weird place. Plenty of airbnb type places about though. Ask on the Chamonix Facebook group (just called Chamonix) if anyone has a room for the night. 

I stayed at the Vagabond many years ago.  At that time it was very noisy, not very clean and full of drunken teenagers.  I've passed it several times since over the years and it appears much the same. It's a Gite there are dozens of better Gites in Chamonix, most of them luxurious in comparison.  I think there is a web site called something like Gites of France. Unless someone comes along and says that Vagabond has improved I would give it a wide berth.

Have a look at La Tapia - I spent a week there last March and it was fine and quiet.
