hi all, we’re looking at getting a 4 season tent and half settled on the MSR remote, but the reviews are not great. Ideally after a double entrance and also midfill of weight too. Any thoughts would be welcome, thanks.

To do what, where and with how many other people?

Ah yes, sorry, good points!

2 person - me and my other half although would aim at 3 berth for the extra space. UK winter use. Ideally under 4kg as I’ll be carrying it, also thinking geodesic as well

In reply to domwhyte:

Well, a Terra Nova Quasar, or variant thereof, is the standard answer, but that may be too expensive; a Macpac Olympus is a tunnel tent and may also be too pricey (I guess, haven't checked). A Vango Nemesis is cheaper, but maybe too heavy. A Robens Lodge may not be sufficient for the conditions.

So, compromise may be the thing. Have you looked on ebay?

Check out Mountain Laurel Design and the Trailstar. It’s a specialist tarp of epic reputation. Chris Townsend reviewed it in winter on the Cairngorms and the silnylon version sheds show and wind better than most. It’s low profile yet room as you like. I had one in bright yellow but got rid of it due to the colour doing my head in. The interior size will easily sleep two plus gear. I guess the only draw back is you have a central pole separating the tarp into two halves but you can overcome that I’m sure.

I had an MSR Access 2 for review last spring and have used it about a dozen times since. It handles the wind VERY well and is big enough for two plus winter kit (just - one bag outside whilst cooking).

I haven't tried much of a snow load on it but the sides are quite steep so it should shed it well enough. The poles are very bendy and very strong - a 70mph gust flattened one end but it just popped back up again.

Would the Alpkit Kangri suit you?

Alpkit Zhota , I love mine.

Twin entrance , very strong ... can be split between 2/3 people easily for wild camps.

Not as cheap as it was ..... tons of room.

I've had a Kangri for the last three years and I love it.  They are not as cheap as they once were but still cheaper than a Quasar.

Will go up to £600 I guess

I like it a lot, saw it in their Hathersage store at Christmas - I’d not worked my charm at that point about ‘needing’ a 4 season tent! Other 1/2 thinks it’s small
