Any thoughts? Dont see this thread exactly on the board..............Am talking rock/pop similar, I have few albums, now n then people say "everybody should have x album" or something similar but I always forget. Ta.

That's such a general question that the sum total of the answers will probably leave you no wiser.

To get your confusion started, the best album I listened to today was The Book of Invasions by The Horslips.  Yesterday, probably Paul Simon's Graceland.  Camel's best album is A Live Record, but I haven't listened to it recently.

And so on. A single, best album? I don't have one.

I think I'd hate this if I came to it having already grown up, but since I first heard it aged 13 or something, it's everything pop music can be. And I'll still be listening to this when I'm on my death bed, whether that's at 40 something or 80 something.

Stepping out of the gloomy void of thrash metal that I chose above, I think you've hit this nail on the head....The Captain with Zappa production. However, the album which everyone should have is...Clear Spot, every track's sublime, and if you've got it as a double CD release with Spotlight Kid then it goes to a higher place than number one (!?!)

As a kid, the first record I bought with my Saturday job money was Bowie's Ziggy Stardust album, which then led me to another contender in Hunky Dory, then when you think things can't get any better, he releases the Berlin trilogy of albums out of which I'll choose Station to Station.

I really don't know how anyone can choose to be honest....

You can always tell when these lists are compiled by the exaggerated esteem in which contemporary releases are held. OK Computer is a good but not great album, certainly not the 4th best of all time. However, the Bends is a magnificent record (OP take note). Meanwhile, the presence of 4 Beatles albums in the top nine says something about the age and eclecticism of the voters.

Some good stuff there all the same. Smiths, Stone Roses, Floyd, Dylan, Stones, Prince, Bowie, Beefheart, Doors, U2. Tuck in OP.

Ah so that's the secret! I enjoy a lot of difficult music, and I love lots of music inspired by Beefheart, lots of the bands who love Beefheart, but I just don't get it. Honestly I've tried, but no, he just doesn't do it for me.

My son was recently on his university radio station doing a version of Desert Island Discs. 2 of his 8 choices were "That's the Way" from Led Zeppelin 3 and "Hole in the Sky" from Sabotage. In his view Sabotage was the best Sabbath album, perhaps the best ever Heavy Metal album. Recently he has introduced me to Slayer. 

Choosing a best album is an impossible task but I would argue that Guy Clark "Old Number 1" is the best Country / Folk album, Steve Earle "Guitar Town" is the best Country / Rock album, and the Incredible String Band "Wee Tam" is the best Psychedelic / Folk album.

Interesting. I thought The Bends was great at the time but for me now it sounds quite dated whereas OK Computer is timeless. Maybe not every track is killer but any record with Paranoid Android and Karma Police is already well ahead of the pack.

Maybe not 'best album ever' material but in the interest of variety (and covering a less fashionable period of more recent history) consider.
