Another dramatic rescue with a happy ending! How do they judge where the back end is and the rotors?

I watched the RAF practise (at least, I assume it was a practise!) this on the northern rim of Glyder Fach, before swooping down a couple of hundred feet. It looked brill!

Old aviation joke:

If helicopters are so safe, how come there are no vintage/classic helicopter air displays?

They have a guy hanging out the back watching very carefully.

There has been lots of practice doing stuff like this in Afghanistan with deplaning / emplaning on steep hillsides, rooftops etc so I imagine most Chinook pilots are very well versed in this kind of flying.

Still bloody impressive mind

And another:

If one engine in a twin engine helicopter fails, the other engine is there to fly you to the scene of the accident.

And another:

I shot down eight aircraft in the war. Luckily four of them belonged to the enemy

In reply to althesin:

Helicopter pilots in general have amazing  spatial awareness , watched one park his car in a really small awkward space once. Did it first go, really quickly without batting an eyelid whilest chatting away to me.

Very impressive. Did you feel the bump when it touched down?
