Short (11m) TED talk by Alex Honnold on contrasting his preparation and solo of Half Dome with that of El Cap. Says it was the most gripped he'd ever been giving a talk. But he comes across clear anyway.

Well ... well .. awesome and Honnold's personality shone through unimpeded for me. Delightful video and gloriously free, for me, of Red Bull sponsored video-type crap. More please .

What a guy - he's got far more guts than me. I think I'm a brave hero and leading athlete when I solo a 20-foot VS on the Roaches ha-ha

"Spent nearly a decade mainly climbing indoors"

Imagine what he could achieve if he wasn't a wall bred climber

Or if he was a pure climber and didn't accept sponsorship money. All that time wasted making silly films could be spent on actually getting good.

Surely then he'd have to get a job for money and climb less?

Imagine what a great chartered accountant he'd make too if he spent less time climbing

Well presumably he'll be better prepared next time then.

Wow! That shot of the boulder problem.... I can't wrap my head around being up there like that. Great short talk.

I must be doing something wrong, when I click on the link it takes me straight to Hugh Herr talking about his high tech limb prostheses, not Honnold.

Yes. Hence the winky eye. I was taking the piss out of the die hards who bang on about there being sponsorship on display in his films...

Hugh Herr's talk is pretty amazing too. You'll probably remember that he used to be one of the best climbers in USA even with his artificial legs.

Actually I think he was a better climber after he lost his legs (not better because he had artificial legs, but because it changed him, more drive, motivation etc.)

In reply to Chris_Mellor:

As they say in America, he's the man! (Well, he and Tommy Caldwell.)

It's very fitting that if you click on the 'rate' button on the TED video, amongst the other options ('inspiring', 'dull' etc.) is 'no-big-deal'.

yep. When I was thumbing a lot to the Peak I had accountants and sales reps who were envious of my free time, telling me I should be like them.
