Nick Bullock on top of The Citadel, Shelterstone, Cairngorms.Ahead of the launch of Nick Bullock's second book, Tides, at Kendal Mountain Festival, we share a chapter from the book in which Nick tells the tale of a weekend jaunt to the Cairngorms...

Ascents of the classic hard routes The Needle and The Citadel are made and the whole trip is a race against the clock with time pressure beating down harder than a spindrift avalanche.

This made me laugh - fun little story!

I've still to read Tides, it's been bumped up the list...

Just one good chapter from a brilliant book. Made for a great read while lounging around Ailefroide in June. Highly recommended!

Has no one else mentioned that the conditions looked a bit thin?

I was going to get on my high horse and say that but then I checked my own photos of Citadel and it wasn’t much whiter. It was also dark by the time we got to that giant flake. But then neither my partner on the day nor I were Peroni supermodels

The book is excellent, recommend getting it. A unique mix of humour, adventure and some fairly dark thoughts but, above all, honesty.

Brilliant, Nick's use of language is just brilliant. Full of understatement in the best tradition, no pathos, no moralising about ethics; just wildly funny and alive.

Great story and the rest of the book is just as good. Highly recommend it to everyone!

It took me a while to get over the 'sending' of whichever winter new route/pitch it was. Possibly the funniest two pages of writing I've ever read in a non-fiction book.
