A lot of this knowledge is known because lichens colonise exposed rock and a reasonably known rate.  I believe this is how some of the knowledge regarding recent Scottish glaciation /permanent snow patches has been gained.

You can read the full paper on the Cryosphere - it’s peer reviewed and open access.

I haven’t actually read beyond the abstract yet, but off the top of my head it was primarily a modelling based effort using climate reconstructions from the Antarctic (which are considered representative globally for various reasons).
