Handrest for old DMM Fly axes

I'm trying to find suitable handrests to convert a pair of old style (grey colour like this https://tinyurl.com/y8oqumdx) DMM Fly axes to leashless.

I tried to fit a Grivel Trigger like this https://tinyurl.com/yazb8lxn in a shop today but it seemed too small. However, someone in another shop said he had fitted them to his Flys. The packaging says its fits shafts 20x30mm which is what the Flys are having now measured them. Do I need to try harder?

I actually prefer the look of the Petzl Trigrest https://tinyurl.com/y8jpqrc6 which is also supposed to fit 20x30mm shafts. The ability to slide it up out of the way for snow plodding would be a real bonus.

Does anybody have any actual experience of fitting either of these (or any other for that matter) to the Flys?

Thanks.

Hi,

You will need to cut out a section of the rubber grip in order to fit the hand rests to the axe.

I’ve managed it with the Petzl trigrest works quite well, you’ll have to remove the rubber but mine fit okay, I had to file the end of the bolt if I remember.

i can send a photo

The Grivel Triggers come in two sizes (not listed by JB):

The large size will fit old Flys - I hacksawed the trigger bit off. You also need a vice to do the screw up, otherwise it will end in tears!

So if you remove the rubber grip it will slide up the shaft but otherwise it would only stay at the bottom?

I thought that might be the case.

Thanks for the other replies also.

I have two of these

https://www.needlesports.com/4140/products/petzl-trigrest-u19-tri-quark-nom...

on each of my old flys.  One at the base of the shaft with the drop down, finger trigger piece removed and the other part way up sat resting on the top of the rubber hand grip.  Due to tape on the upper shaft I can't really slide the top one up anymore but it never made that much difference anyway.  Never needed a vice and no problems so far.

Large size and hacksaw the metal 'loop' off - that worked for me

Trigrest - when my foot popped I snapped the one on my quark, i don't fully trust them

I fitted those plumbers earth clamps with a bit of self amalgamating tape around them to smooth them off and it worked really well:

They're single screw ones, I think I used ones with two screws which worked better. They're rock solid once you've clamped them up and quite low profile.

My trig rests clamp onto the shafts fine but are a permanent fixture they don't move once on.

The OLD style Grivel Sliders worked very well.

They clamped fast to the shaft after removing a bit of rubber. Suspect they will be hard to come by now.
