Instead of 'lashing' out on equipment, you could always sign up for a winter walking course somewhere. They'll probably lend/rent you the kit.
Splashing out? Not good to lash out with ice axe and crampons unless a Yeti is chasing after you!!
You can also hire them in most places where you’d go winter walking.
