Definitely not threaded correctly.

Now the one I've got is threaded the right way - makes it so much easier to use !

That doesn't look like a Hex. More like a "reamed out" engineering nut. That's how we used to thread them in the 60's as a substitute for pebbles. Most people had several different sizes. My early climbing partner in 64 was an engineering apprentice in Bradford and provided us with several "nuts" as well as making some mild steel pegs. Exciting days!

No, that's how I bought mine back in the early 70's - made a change from reamed out engineering nuts, and a lot lighter than the other manufactured options that were without the drilling.
