The European Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) is being built in Chile

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extremely_Large_Telescope

There's speculation that its eventual successor could be called the Overwhelmingly Large Telescope, but I think they could learn from UK climbing grades and call it E2.

Or the Bloody Large Telescope!

Numbers are so impersonal so it should be alphabetical.

I suggest the F###ing Large Telescope.

As usual, Randall Munroe has pertinent suggestions: https://xkcd.com/1294/

Why is it not called the Chillean Extremely Large Telescope if its being built in Chile?

Or why is the European Extremely Large Telescope not being built in Europe?

I tried to buy a sandwich and they gave me a giant astronomical instrument.  Bloody typical!

Because it is built by a European consortium and is bigger than the US competition.

Because in the Atacama desert you can see much better (no light pollution, extremely dry air, and some useful mountain tops to get you above significant parts of the atmosphere,...) and more interesting stuff (e.g. our galaxy centre is visible from the southern hemisphere only).

It will have a 39.3 m primary mirror! That's bigger than many radio telescopes. The secondary mirror is 4.2 m. I remember when 4.2 m was pretty decent for a primary mirror. I'm absolutely astonished.

I'd like that in my garden but I have to make do with an 8 incher.

Are you suggesting that these astronomers are compensating for something?

Looking forward to the Brexit Underwhelmingly Tiny Telescope (BUTT). To be built in a lorry park outside Dover.

Is that the one that will give clear views of Uranus?

Edit: To avoid light pollution it'll be built where the sun don't shine

Nowhere in Europe is as good to locate it.  In Chile they have the space, altitude and more constant weather (humidity/cloud cover) to make the telescope effective
