So we are hoping to squeeze in a few climbs on Sunday before our ferry leaves Santander at 5pm. Ideally we need a crag sub 2 hours away to maximise climb time ! Originally we were thinking of etxauri, but something closer would be more ideal.

7a-7b+ range (Unless it’s granite!!! Sub 7 range!)

Has anyone been to Villanueva de Valdegovía?

any suggestions much appreciated

if your arriving from the East, Valdegovía just about fits your needs of 2 hour drive to Santander. It’s a good 20+ minute walk from where you park, so factor that in each way.  It’d be a rush.

That being said, it’s a gem of place - quiet, fields of horses in amongst woodland.  Lovely.  It’s an old school Spanish venue so expect some drilled pockets on blank sections (forgivable when you compare it to the ancient dwellings carved into the base of the wall).  Nice consistent onsight territory and well bolted.

Campa is the first sector you come to. Workable topo here: http://www.en.enlavertical.com/sectors/view/512

The routes around Metamorphosis (7a) will start you off.  But, personally, I’d arrive with a day or two in hand and have a look around rather than rush it on the last day.  There are lots of sectors well worth seeking out - pocketed  walls, roofs, tufas...

Ramales de la Victoria is a contender.  The tourist office sells the local guide book.

Rumenes is just over one hour and has very high quality routes from 7a-7c+.

It is mostly tufas, so may seep.

Rumenes is in the Roca Verde guidebook as are other crags like Poo de Cabrales (slighly further drive, not as good, but may be dry). Contact Richie Patterson of Roca Verde for a conditions report?

Rumenes (Hermida Gorge North)

Poo de Cabrales

If your talking Santander, Huddersfield I'd say Holmfirth Edge.

Depends where you are coming from. If you are looking at Valdegovía then Baltzola or Oñati No match for crag id:8609 are a similar driving time away; and the latter is right by the road...

Another couple of options in the Roca Verde area would be Berodia (90 mins away)

https://rockaroundtheworld.co.uk/2016/10/23/berodia/

and

Cuevas del Mar (70 mins away)

https://rockaroundtheworld.co.uk/2016/10/22/cuevas-del-mar/

Both fun climbing with very easy access (especially the latter, which is roadside as well as seaside)

Thanks dom! Didn’t bump into you this winter, maybe next winter van trip!

No, we were in Greece rather than Spain this year. We'd definitely recommend it for your next big van trip!

No tufas, but plenty of dogshit. On the plus side there are few Spanish pissing everywhere and it's a post-Brexit friendly venue.
