Probably linked to global warming. Most other things are.

We are in luck.  Big meteors are one of the ways in which we can stop global warming in its tracks.  We just need one the size of the peak district to come down in, um, the peak district.

Ice climbing will come in worldwide, the peak will be surrounded by a proper mountain range and future cockroach palentologists get to debate about whether mammals had the potential to evolve intelligence.

Everyone wins!

Nice try, but we all know that it's meterorites that reach the ground and not meteors, whatever the date. Right?

Blinkinkin 'eck, that was lucky the meteor didn't trigger the unstable lirpaloof geological structure of the summit cone.

Excellent! Especially the bit about going out for a fag, the way it was thrown in so casually as to actually be believable.
