The Lakes was the place where I first got into the mountains. First hillwalking with my Dad, then scrambling as a teenager, and eventually trad climbing as an adult. It's the place I associate with escaping from normal life to soak up the beauty of the landscape and experience the adventure of the mountains.
The best routes in the Lakes are as good as good as it gets: big - for England! multi-pitch mountain routes on perfect rock like Central Pillar on Esk Buttress and Saxon on Scafell are amongst the very best routes I've ever climbed. And the smaller quiet crags are beautiful too - some of the most beautiful, grippy rock around, set in a landscape that nourishes the soul. Yeah, it rains a lot, but if it's raining, go for a walk. Or if it's really bad, go to the pub.
