Can anyone point me to trousers that would be good for about a 5 miles ride and still look OK for a meeting and not as if I’ve just come off the Tour of Britain?

Riding 5 miles will soon wear out the crutch in smart pair of trousers. Shorts or leggings, trousers in rucksack.

Most meetings take place around a table. Who is going to see your trousers?

Depends what sort of meeting ? Site meeting, board meeting etc. 

Smart pair of jeans would be ok, chinos ? Howies and others do jeans/trousers for cycling in.

Endura urban stretch if they fit

Try a kilt.

Other than the kilt I would say that none of the suggestions I would consider as smart trousers.

I wear these for the commute - they don't look so smart once the inside leg is scraped with chain-oil

(up-size if you're not built like a streak of piss)

Spoke. Smart chinos, tough and water resistant. Wear mine heaps on the bike and they look great.

Check out Prana Bronson trousers ('pants'!!) - they have a bit of stretch and seem pretty hard-wearing (and machine washable!)

Swrve have black trousers that are pretty indestructible and smart enough for me to wear at work.
