I posted a while back with some 'Gems' from Outside magazine that I thought the UKC audience might enjoy.  I said I would post more as I came across them but haven't put anything up recently, mostly because there hasn't been a lot of good stuff.  Unfortunately with Outside you have to wade through a lot of sh*te to get the occasional gem!

Anyway I had my latest issue through a couple of days back and have now reached critical mass and think it's worth posting up a new selection, and all y'all might have a few more minutes to read them as they are generally quite long reads.   I've added a few that sprang to mind from editions passed too.

The newest edition had an editorial that started "Generally speaking, a u-shaped curve on a graph that tracks fatalities..." and then went on to talk about Cycling fatalities...proof of how far in advance these magazines are written - this was the MAY edition!

So here they are:

"I loved Bike Touring until I got paid to do it" self explanatory- https://www.outsideonline.com/2407239/bike-touring-dream-job-nightmare

My Father's SOS from the middle of the sea, echoes of Donald Crowhurst https://www.outsideonline.com/2360811/mayday-fathers-disappearance-pirates

A Rattle with Death, or why you should always wear steel shinpads when walking in the US https://www.outsideonline.com/2315436/surviving-rattlesnake-bite

The Yarnell Hill Fire, distressing account of the "Granite Mountain Hotshots" last fire, an insight into the terrifying and tragic world of US wildfire fighting https://www.outsideonline.com/1926426/19-true-story-yarnell-hill-fire

The Egg Thief, interesting article about the international market for raptor eggs, some of the action taking place in North Wales - https://www.outsideonline.com/2378786/egg-thief-jeffrey-lendrum-falcon

At Bottom Repeat At Bottom, deepest submersible excursions  -   https://www.outsideonline.com/2403988/victor-vescovo-five-deeps

Final Exam, the final exam for wannabe guides at the Ecole Nationale de Ski et Alpinisme - https://www.outsideonline.com/2405575/chamonix-mountain-guide-test-probatoi...

Inside Us Army Ranger School - https://www.outsideonline.com/2411895/army-ranger-school

PS if you read and enjoyed please comment to stop the thread from sinking quickly into obscurity so others can take pleasure too?  I just asked people to "Watch, like and share!" didn't I?  *vomits*.

I liked the bike touring one. You’d have heard some rage-filled expletives from me if a sprinkler had gone off under my tent.

Just read the first one about the bike tour guide. Some aspects reminded me of my own time as a walking holiday guide. You do meet some very strange people. None of them wee' d on my tent or attempted to kill me though. Shall look forward to reading the other tales.

Yup, I think this was part of the reason this one appealed so much to me - a cautionary tale about turning your passion into your work!

Loved the rattlesnake tale. Well written.

It is isn't it, terrifying too..."When I awoke, and after I’d finished my first bout of violent vomiting..."

Good selection! The snakebite story echoes some comments on SuperTopo about the incredible expense of getting treated in the US if you are not insured. Or even if you are insured sometimes.
