It's called "a cheval."

I've always known it as "À Cheval" (i.e. on a horse).

I know that (I did French in school) but its a tad pretentious for basically shuffling along on your bum. I'd look askance at anyone using this expression. Perhaps its a class thing, like cow versus beef, pig pork etc. Those damn aristocratic Normans!
