Paramo repairs

Can anyone recommend somewhere to get a zip replaced on Paramo salopettes?

I tried Paramo themselves but they're booked solid 'till January and I'll need them for the winter. I'd rather use someone with experience of technical clothing as opposed to just a regular alterations place.

Cheers.

You could try Alpkit, especially if you can get up to the Keswick store. They're pretty busy too but might be able to fit you in.

Cotswolds have started to do a repair and care service. No direct experience of using them though.

Are there any tailors in your town? I found a little shop in a secondary shopping area run by a Middle Eastern husband and wife team. They put a new zip into my climbing trousers for £15, including the zip. They did a fantastic job and I was able to collect them within a week of leaving them there.

I've used Paramo a couple of times in the past for zip replacement, as as you found they have a backlog of many weeks/months, and last time I used them to replace a jacket zip they charged £40! They really need o improve their customer service here by expanding the repair shop.

There are but I'm reluctant to use one without a recommendation from someone else who's used them for technical clothing.

I used LSR to replace the zip on my Paramo jacket many years ago. They are not cheap but they are a specialist repairer of outdoor gear and the zip is still fine.

I’ve used LSR ( lancashiresportsrepairs.co.uk ) in the past and can highly recommend them. I haven’t used Scottish Mountain Gear ( scottishmountaingear.com ), though they seem to get good reviews too…

One benefit of Paramo is that it isn't really 'technical clothing'. There is no need for seam sealing tape application, etc, and the seams are entirely conventional. Provided they pay attention to how the zip is sewn in, and repeat that, there should be no trouble. Considering the complexity of some normal tailoring, I'd suggest replacing a zip in a Paramo item would be straightforward for them.

Go and ask, and point out what you think might be difficult.

The trouble is that I don't know what might be difficult about it so I'd rather use someone with experience of such clothing and fabrics even if that costs a little more.

In reply to DaveHK:

Okay.

I do have some experience of sewing, and some repairs (including to the zip-off sleeve of an ME Microtherm jacket, which is essentially the same construction as Paramo, except for the direction of the micropile liner). I don't think I've seen anything in Paramo that would trouble a decent high street tailoring alteration service.

In reply to DaveHK:

You could try http://www.cioch-direct.co.uk/ who use the same Nikwax Analogy materials for their Cioch range of clothing, and do repairs at least for their range. They sell Paramo so probably would repair that as well.

Another recommendation for LSR, excellent repair service from them in the past.

Hilltrek near Aboyne in Aberdeenshire, repair Paramo, they have replaced the seats on both my partners and my Aspire Salopettes.

They also manufacture their own paramo style garments and do made to measure, and alterations.  So will have no shortage of experience.

No idea of turnaround at present, my partners repair took about 4 -5 weeks, while mine just post first covid lock down was done in about 10 days. My new bum (oo-er) cost about £30-40. My partner had some other repairs as well and the bill was about £60. Excluding any p&p.

I have no connection to them, just a customer.

Another vote for LSR who repaired a couple of Patagonia things for me (at Patagonia's expense!) after I set fire to them. Yes, I am an idiot. They took a little while, but were excellent. They are in Burnley

Here's another possible option for you (Sheffield based but you could put your salopettes in the post if needs be):

Is that the same Anna who used to do the repairs at Alpkit in Hathersage?  If so, she's a magician!
