Widest tyre for specialised Allez (2013 sport)

Does anyone know what the widest tyre I can get away with on a 2013 allez sport? Moved from the city to the sticks and my road tyres don’t cut it anymore so want something wider with some tread.

(Secretly hoping the answer is something narrow so I can justify a gravel bike)

Pop into your LBS and see if they have a wheel they can slot into the frame. My guess is it will be 25mm. You might get a 28mm in the rear but I wouldn't count on it.

I have 25s on my allez of similar age.

I'm not near it till Wednesday night and I could have a look at the clearances for you. There's room above just for a set of crudracer guards on the 25s which are gatorskins.

That’d be grand if you could. Many Thanks

I would expect your Allez to be built around 700x23c tyres at that vintage - certainly my older road bikes are.

You may well be able to get a 25mm tyre in, but you won't have much wriggle room if the wheel isn't nicely true and dished - the narrowest clearance is usually between the chainstays, behind the bottom bracket, so check there for any possible rubbing.

Just been for a look, my tyres are 25mm Conti GP 4 season, granted they're not fully pumped up and my Allez is a 2014 frame but....

The tightest clearance from the sidewall is on the drive side chainstay and it's 4-5mm, other side chainstay is 5-6. Seatstays have another 2mm each side, I reckon there's about 4-5mm from tread to rear brake mounting bar.

On the front there's at least 6mm from sidewalls to forks and above tread.

You should be reet with 25mm but no larger.

I have 25mm Gatorskins on a 2009ish Allez Elite. There is adequate clearance when riding, but getting the front wheel off through the brake pads (in released position!) is a tight squeeze with the tyre fully inflated.
