European Bouldering Holiday

The girlfriend and I are looking to go on holiday, most likely sometime between mid-September and mid-late October for a week. We are looking to find somewhere with a lot of cool bouldering, grade ranges between v0-5 but also somewhere with a lot of other activities to do. We'll probably go for 7 days and boulder 3 to 4 of those so it'd be great to fill the others with active stuff like hikes/scrambles, via ferrata, SUP, MTB, or anything else. We'd also love some nice towns to walk around and explore in the local area. We probably won't rent a car as it's expensive since we're aged 24 & 25 so good infrastructure/stuff within walking distance would be a big plus! We're looking at places in Europe, both of us speak French to a high level and spent and summer seasons in a few different areas. We've been looking at Zillertal, Fontainebleau, Chamonix, Magic Wood and any advice on those or recommendations for other places would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

Have a look at Silvapark. We've always driven as part of a longer trip but there are excellent transport links from Munich> Innsbruck>Galtur. Think you can hire pads in Galtur.

Loads of brilliant stuff on gniess.Easy access, seen many folk taking bikes up on the lifts but that's not my game so don't know much about it. There's also VF.

We've had several trips and would certainly go back again.

The only drawback could be its altitude if there is early snow but I guess that's true of many higher alpine bouldering areas Sustenpass, Gottardo etc.

HTH.

Font is amazing at that time of year. Surrounding towns are nice in a boujy kind of way, obviously it’s not mountainous but Paris is an excellent place for a rest day. Getting around is a hassle without a car but if you have one yourself, or can borrow one, it’s an easy drive down.

Albarracín, Spain could be definitely an option.

Might be a pain without a car though?

Thank you all, the ideas and advice are all appreciated!

Public transport-wise Switzerland and Austria are good. Zillertal you will struggle but Magic Wood (CH) and Silvapark (A) would be great. Magic Wood has more of a climbing scene, Silvapark is quieter. It depends what you're looking for. Magic Wood is amazing for higher grades, less good for Lowe grades. Silvapark has poorer landings, very sharp rock if your skin isn't in condition and would be ok in September but by October might be out of season. Not sure about pad hire in Silvapark. Both Magic Wood and Silvapark have a decent campsite options - either a short bus / skilift away or directly at the boulders. Both world class venues.

Someone mentioned Albarracín. Tbh you could get there by public transport, Airbnb in the town and hitch to the bouldering easily. It's a five minute ride and there would be people heading that way all the time. Pad hire at the climbing shop, very skin friendly and tonnes of amazing climbing in lower grades, stable weather..

Fontainebleau gets a mention. Without a car it can be done, but probably involves wild camping and that's frowned upon really.

There are tonnes of other places but those fit your criteria pretty well. Wherever you go you'll be back, for sure.

Worth being flexible though. You can easily get a week of rain in the Alps and in Font. Albarracín less so.. Wales might be a good back up..

Good but sharp. For a week trip you'd have to be getting out on rock a lot before you went. Even then..

I visited a few years ago. Excellent place. We were there Easter time and there was still skiing available on tops and it was t-shirt weather on the rocks.

We flew in, rented a car in Spain and stayed in an apartment in Font Romeu I think. Not sure about public transport, but there's a campsite in the middle of the climbing that also has chalets etc.
