Hi, I'm heading to Chamonix in July (2 weeks) and looking for some advice on booking huts around Chamonix.

What is the easiest way to book (phone, email or online etc.)?

Is it worth buying the reciprocal rights card?

Can you just rock up and pay (regular huts not on the MB motorway)?

Thanks in advance!

To be honest if you are making more than about 4-5 nights of bookings it's better to join the French Alpine club, the hut discount is lager and it pays for itself quite quickly. I found that just phoning a day or two before was fine.

Austrian Alpine Club(UK) gets you discount and insures you for rescue and repatriation.   It's a while since I stayed in one but we used to just phone a few days beforehand.  It's also worth calling in on the Bureaux des Guides in the centre of town for up to date conditions. I seem to recall they have booked huts on my behalf a couple of times.
