We have booked a family holiday to Sicily (San Vito La Capo) at the beginning of the school holidays (last week of July). It is a family holiday but all of us climb so planning on some bolt clipping whilst there. I know it’s going to be hot so climbing would be early morning or evening. Anyone experienced climbing there at that time of year?

Climbing in Sicilian summer heat is like voluntarily subjecting yourself to a personal sauna on Mount Etna, where the scorching sun turns your body into a well-done cannoli, with your sweat acting as the spicy caponata that seasons your every step.

so only a chalkbag required, hang out with your wang out

We were there in January and there were days that climbing as uncomfortably hot by late morning. The main cliffs all face West so perhaps very early morning will be your best bet as even at dusk we were still climbing in t-shirts. There are a few recessed areas and caves which may provide some shelter from the sun.

The Rockfax guidebook is pretty good. Enjoy the gelato!

I've climbed (and bolted) there every month of the year but February. Aim to be off the rock by midday and climb in the shade.

It will be very hot then Im afraid. Though you may want to check out Mounte Monaco, Cattedrale nel Deserto which is North facing but without a breeze it can get greasy in the afternoons. as noted DWS is a good option for a bit of climbing. If you do get cooler conditions in the evening then head to Scogliera di Salinella - South and Far South as it is easy access for a quick few routes. Id also recommend the Rockfax guide which has all the info you need including climbing in Palermo which may be a nice outing for the day or before you fly home.
