Sorry to break the very sad news that David died this morning following a long battle with cancer. He was a great guy who achieved much in his personal life whilst touching the lives of many and providing insprication.His deep belief in fairness and equality were deep rooted and he always strived to help anyone disadvantaged often to his own cost. Deepest sympathies to his wife Liz, son Mark, good friends Jason and Dave and to his many other friends and past work colleagues.

Although I did not know David personally, I know a lot of people that do, and they have always spoke so highly of him. However, in recent times I think we all got an insight into the person that he was.

I didn't know David other than through this forum, and I had conversed with him a number of times, including a comforting email from him when I was diagnosed with cancer myself. I always enjoyed reading his posts and I am so sorry to read of his death. Yes, he was a great guy. My deepest sympathy and condolences to his family and friends.

In reply to rn1934rr: It's a funny thing that I guess many of us are still trying to get our heads around: getting to know someone a little through our computers and then equally trying to get our heads around hearing that they've gone. It's seeing someone almost daily without actually 'seeing' them, and then not seeing them again. We're the first generation in the history of humanity who are having to deal with that.
I'm not sure how long David has been a UKC regular, it sort of feels like I've been reading his contributions to one thread or another forever. At a guess, it must be the best part of a decade at least. Always friendly, always positive, even if he disagreed with you. RIP David, you'll be missed. And my best wishes to David's family and friends - I hope it's some small consolation that so many of us on UKC who didn't know him well, all seemed to be left with the opinion of 'what a nice bloke'.

Very sad news indeed! I am one of the many who never got to meet him, but was a 'friend' on Facebook and on here!
He was always positive and was always nice in threads even when he didnt agree with what someone had said!

His willingness to engage with people who had views the polar opposite of his own always struck me as the sign of someone who believed in being fair. Even to the point of offering to take one individual out for a pint and a spin on the bike. I wish I had half his tolerance and patience!

In reply to rn1934rr: I'm so sad to learn that David has lost his battle but was lucky enough to spend a little time with him in days gone by, and latterly online with friendship, advice and many kind offers to stay at his place in Capel.
In all my adult life there has been no one who has inspired me more than David to be a better, more positive and caring person. Like many others I'll miss him and know that I was blessed to have been a small part of his life.

In reply to rn1934rr: Like many I do not know David other than on this forum and even then onnly in Glimpses. Despite this I am genuinely saddened to hear the news, after the charity bike ride I had been hoping that some sort of medical miracle would happen and he would just go on and on.

Very sad news. I met David when he led our CWA training a couple of years ago. Really nice bloke, generous, very friendly and enthusiastic with a great teaching style. My deepest condolences to his family, he will be missed by many.

I have a lot of respect for the guy (of what i know) as he was true to himself, held his ground and always the diplomat, whilst at the same time always open to suggestion and never afraid to review his opinion. In reply to rn1934rr: Terrible news. I never met David, despite a couple of failed attempts to get something mtbing going in nth wales. Though in saying this I always had a good time talking to him on the threads here. He came across as one of the best, most honest, most reasonable and likeable characters on these forums. He always stood up for what he believed in and often argued down posters with racist or other unacceptable viewpoints with a cool head and calm reasoned argument. He may not have ever changed any of their opinions but always came out the best of any of those interchanges he was involved in. His passing is a great loss to his family, his friends, this community and society as a whole. RIP.

Like many, I only knew David through these forums. However, in those fleeting moments, you could see that he was a genuine, humble and caring person.
He will be sorely missed on these forums and his diplomacy and tact even under adversity, should serve as a valuable and lasting lesson to us all.

RIP David. There is small cabin by a lake, deep in the forest of northern Saskatchewan. In the cabin there is a book with your name in it which I placed there last year to help send positive vibes. I always hoped you would get a chance to visit it yourself. Sadly not but I hope it made you smile to think you could touch such a far away place?

My sympathies are with the many on here who knew him and his family and friends. Reading this thread, it seems he made a good name for himself during his brief lifetime and that is testimony to a thoroughly decent chap.

In reply to Siward: I was lucky enough to meet Dave at I.M.Marsh College in the 80’s when he was my granddad – there to show us young pups the ropes (literally on occasions), his warmth, humour and patience shone through – as did his love of dodgy music. After a twenty year gap it was a joy to catch up with him on UKC in naughties – and yet again he was happy to share his knowledge and experience with others.
Thoughts of love to his family at this difficult time, I hope you can take some comfort from what high regard everyone who met him held him in – but you of all would know why.

David provided my SPA training a few years back, I found him to be an extremely likeable bloke. He was even kind enough to put me up in his cottage in North Wales during the course.
He will be truly missed! My thoughts are with his close friends and family.

I met David via UKC back in 2007 when I was looking to piggy back on a trip to Rjukan, David became a close friend and mentor for me not only in climbing terms but as a friend and compatriot.
Its nice to see so many tributes on here from everybody, he loved his sport dearly and was intimately connected with the outdoors, it was his life and his love of mother nature was reflected in his positive attitude and warm spirit. There were never any exclusions with David, everyone was welcome and 'the more the merrier' was always a rallying call. He will be sadly missed.
As David was recovering from surgery earlier this year he often logged onto UKC to relieve some of the boredom of being indoors, yet this sometimes proved to be very upsetting for him, as at times there were some downright vitriolic responses to his comments and posts from forum members and some heavy handed comments from moderators...
For me this is the bitter-sweet side of the UKC forums. Theres no doubting we have a wonderful climbing community here in the UK, and everyone I have ever met in this country whilst climbing and mountaineering have been wonderful and insightful people. I just think its a shame that when many us climb aboard the UKC ship we tend to forget where we are and start behaving like angry motorists stuck in a car jam...
Didn't want this post to come across as a negative, especially given David was such a positive person - (it was only 2 months ago when he defied the doctors statement that "he would never ride a mountain bike again" to go and do a 12 mile lap of the red at Llandegla Forest with Dom and I)... Whilst a lot of the things that went on on this site gave him great joy, there were many that deeply upset him...

I feel I ought to add more, but when I saw this thread this morning I got a little bit choked up, and put the bare minimum I could cope with at that point.
Trying to write this now, I've got tears streaming down my face, and I can barely see the computer screen.
I never met David Hooper other than on-line, and that's my loss.
When I was in hospital last year having one fairly major operation, and - 2 months later - a follow up, reconnection job, David emailed me as a response to some of my posts on this forum detailing the misery I was going through from the after effects of these operations, as he was going through operations and other medical horrors and worries like I was.
I wish that at some point in my life I can be as outgoing and supportive to someone I'd never met as he was to me.

I went over to see David in his flat around three months ago, not long after he had recieved the awful news that the cancer was back on his liver, it was pressing on his bile duct and making him tired and jaundiced, he looked frail, thin, yellow and his skin was maddeningly itchy and I felt so sorry for him. He was however, in good spirits, wouldn't let me make the tea and never once lamented his condition. In fact, he produced his new cycling shorts and went into great detail how the special padding protected his sore arse. We had a long chat and a laugh but I came away thinking that might be it for David.
It wasn't, cycling adventures were to follow, and fundraising, credit to Dom Stockton and Jamie Light on their great love for David and helping him in his final circuit of Llandegla, they must be feeling this very hard.
David's spirit conquered death, he's shown us all how to do it.

We have been moved beyond words and humbled by the outpouring of thoughts, emotions and genuine feelings and love expressed by so many of you. There are those of you who knew him and even more who knew him through his postings on UKC. He touched so many peoples lives and enriched the lives of so many of us, that all we can say at the moment is, thank you so much to all who that have written, thank you...

I can only echo what everyone else here has said, but Dominion's thought is particularly apt...
I can't really get my thoughts in order, so today I'm just going to head out to Llandegla, try to convert a couple of climbing buddies into mountain biking and generally just be in a place that Dave and Chewwie loved. I'm hoping in time that maybe UKC's bikers may want to come along on a similar ride, enjoy a cappuccino and a bacon barm with fried onions and maybe raise a smile and a few quid for Dave's favourite charities.

The last time I saw him, in June, when he visited us with Liz, he seemed so vibrant still and full of plans for his final months of life. He was even out mountain biking soon after, the video of which is on youtube.
I didn't know him all that well, all things told, but I knew enough of him to recognise a kindred spirit on a lot of levels.
He gave me a Gransfors Bruks axe as a wedding present. I'll think of him whenever I use it.

Daiv took me for my SPA training back in 2007 when i knew virtually nothing about climbing, his passion for the sport inspired me to carry on with this climbing malarky. 5 years on ive spent 4 years working as an instructor partly down to the fact of his laid back and enthusiastic view to teaching climbing. He'll be sorely missed in the climbing community. Rest in Peace.

Really saddened (and shocked) to read this last night. I'd been away from the computer for a couple of days (introducing my 6 year old son to Welsh singletrack as it happens - I think David would have approved) so I missed this story.
Reading the whole thread it sings out how cherished David was by everyone and just how much inspiration he's given to so many. His influence has spread far and wide.
Rest in peace David, thanks for everything.

In reply to rn1934rr: Like everybody else I only had amazing interactions with David. When I was a naive newbie David took some time to write to me and give me positive useful advice instead of jumping on the bandwagon to insult or tease me for my lack of knowledge.
