OPINION: GPS on Everest - Another Ring in the Circus

Everest North Face reflected in the lake below base camp. , 4 kbThe Nepalese tourist authorities have unveiled a pilot scheme to put GPS trackers on some Everest climbers for the coming season, purportedly aimed at verifying successful summit attempts and increasing climber safety. If successful, the GPS will be mandatory from next season, according to the Director/Information Officer of Nepal's tourism department, Durga Dutta Dhakal.

Kevin Duffy comments on this recent announcement. Could the use of GPS devices cause more problems than they solve?

The other way of looking at it is who cares.

Let the misguided fools who are still genuinely impressed by someone putting other climbers and an extensive sherpa team at risk so they can be safely guided up everest (because it is the highest) worry and fret about if the ascent is fraudulent or not.

The rest of the climbing community can just get on with their climbing and leave the idiots in the everest ego circus to get overexcited about things.

Of course the number of people who are impressed by the Everest ego circuit vastly outnumber those who aren't. Your real climbing community doesn't really figure in this anymore.
