[Dave Birkett and Scale Force, 3 kb]Dave Birkett isn't a big fan of skiing, and as bad luck would have it that's what he was doing in France as the big snow and freeze hit the UK.

On his return he thought it would be back to work as a stonemason in the Lakes. His luck changed however and as well as lots of winter climbing he was lucky enough to sample some light, buttery, thick shortbread from the Harrisons' at Brotherilkeld farm in Eskdale.

This is Dave's story of the best winter climbing spell he's ever had in the Lake District.

In reply to UKC Articles: A great article thanks Dave, full of the fun of it all. New routes, hard routes, easier routes, pubs, partners (both types) , kindness, weather, sheep rescues, friends, tea, penguins and homemade biscuits. Not quite all human life is there, but many of the best bits are.
