The wizard's apprentice, 4 kbFor a couple of years now, the climbing world have been looking forward to The wizard's apprentice Petr Pavlíček's documentary about Adam Ondra, and now it's finally here. It was worth the wait.
The original plan was to release the movie in the fall of 2010, but as is often the case, that was...

6 hours later and it's 67% downloaded...

Is their server terrible? My internet is very fast generally!

In reply to James Malloch: Guessing their connection is under very heavy load at the moment, a few hundered people trying to download a 3Gb file at the same time would tend to do that!

(currently downloading at 60 Kb/s, 10hrs left...)

In reply to remus: Ah I guess so. I'm down to 34 minutes, 0.2 GB

Not going to have time to watch it now with getting up early for bouldering....

Is there a plan to release a bluray dvd version?
In reply to xyz: English subtitles or not?

Is there a lot of screaming on it?

In reply to Björn Pohl - UKC: left mine to download overnight. Just started watching it and it keeps freezing for a second. Sound is OK though. Anyone else had this problem? Could be something to do with everyone downloading at once I guess

I disagree completely. But that's personal perspective.

Its not got the quick cuts and pumping tunes overlaying a series of hard sends like a lot of the dosage/progression/king lines DVD series that seem to be synonymous with climbing films of the last few years. There isn't the instant gratification you expect.

What you have is a charming look into the life of a very talented person who works extremely hard to achieve their goals. Its a slow burning but ultimately more rewarding film.

I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys climbing and is interested in climbers pushing the limits.

I completely agree. I'm quite bored of the normal type of film, this makes a refreshing and rewarding change.

I found this to be a v inspiring film and a fantastic expose of what it takes to operate at adam's level. We're all used to hearing of adam's fast repeats and "effortless" on sights. It's very easy to presume that this stems from some unique natural talent, rather than many years of hard work - both mental and physical. This documentary goes some way towards bridging the gap between the media "myth" and the reality.

Agree that it takes a refreshingly different approach to the big up style productions. This also feels more in keeping with the content/subject; Adam being presented as a exceptionally talented "weekend warrior", rather than a "rad California dirtbag".

Only thing that was missing for me was footage from his uk trip/s. I presume that the most significant achievements took place after filming?

Out of the most recent batch of climbing films, I probably rank it slightly below mt asgard and long hope route. However, it's definitely worth a punt for the download.

Great film, interesting story.

Sorry, I guess I should have elaborated.

I did enjoy the section on Adam's story but was disappointed with how few climbs were featured. Not many when you read about how many hard routes he's done.

In reply to Björn Pohl - UKC: My God. My day is shot to pieces. And I was going to go bouldering in prime grit conditions as well...

In reply to Björn Pohl - UKC: anyone else having trouble downloading it? Keeps quitting just before its done. Bloody irritating.

I agree - one thing that really stood out is just how hard he tries. Must be tough mentally, but he puts absolutely everything on the line.

Quite a review from Andrew Bisharat at Rock and Ice....

'Though “The Wizard’s Apprentice” has already received a few favorable reviews online, I, for one, could not have been more disappointed with the final product.'
