NEWS: Third Ascent of If 6 was 9 E9 6c by Craig Matheson

Craig Matheson has made the third ascent of If 6 was 9 at Iron Crag in Cumbria. Established in 1992 by Dave Birkett, the line waited 15 years for a second ascent by Dave MacLeod and almost as long again for Craig's recent ascent 12 years later.

Some effort, especially on 8th November. I made up my mind it was too cold for mountain trad weeks ago!

Amazing. When Mike Hutton and I were up there in July researching the Lake District Climbs book, that wall was wet and unclimbable. It did look extremely impressive though - great effort Craig.

Brilliant stuff! In the Committed 2 DVD, MacLeod reckons this was "easily the hardest trad route in the UK" when first done in '92.

Panic is autonomic, not auto-immune. Although I’m sure I’d come out in a rash just looking at the route, if looks terrifying.
