Dave Douglas's Awesome Walls in Liverpool has reputation for not only excellent climbing, but importantly a warm, welcoming and friendly atmosphere, according to many who climb there. Dave and Awesome Walls (www.awesomewalls.co.uk) is an interesting story and maybe one day it will be told.

Dave has a new wall under construction in Manchester.

In addition Sheffield's, the Climbing Works, is expanding south to Bristol.

In reply to tlm: Manchester does have the capacity for 2 "good" lead walls i believe. MCC is an excellent wall but it does get very busy as do the london and leeds walls. I beleive they are going to extend but i suspect that will be much like adding an additional lane to a motorway which really needs about 6 lanes. (crap example maybe)


I reckon an additional wall should spread capacity and prevent (at least for some time) there being a one in one out situation or at least reduce the levels of queueing at the popular lead walls.

Anyone know what the climbing facilities at the chillfactore are expected to be? The website does imply a "normal" climbing wall.

In reply to tbertenshaw: This gets better and better. It's one of the most impressive mills in the area so it's a victory for heritage conservation as well (Ok I'm sad).

The only problem with MCC from a personal point of view is the lack of constant angle overhanging lead walls - only two lines, and one of those is a corner line - so I'm hoping Stockport is gonna rectify that.

I'm not sure about the capacity issue. MCC has generated a huge number of people who wouldn't otherwise have climbed - so your motorway analogy is probably a good one!

It would be great if a new wall in Manchester was build in the North of the city. South Manchester already has Rope Race within easy reach, Manc Climbing Centre, Salford Uni etc. etc. There are climbers like myself who would prefer not to fight our way around the M60 or central Manchester to get to a wall on a rainy Winter's evening. Perhaps the Middleton/Bury/Swinton area could support a wall with towns such as Rochdale, Oldham, Bolton, Blackburn, Preston and others not too far away. I know there are small walls in many of these places but nothing really to compare to the bigger centres.

Yeah. But only one OK leading wall (MCC) without decent bouldering, and one good boulderng wall (Broughton) which will probably be knocked down at anytime.

The rest are a waste of time, or not in Manchester aren't they?

Why doesn't the headline read "Stockport and Bristol" then?

I emailed to ask a while ago - I was told "The climbing wall will be in the street and will be aimed at a first timer and novice climbers to encourage new comers to the sport."

At the time I thought this implied simply a bouldering wall, no ropes or leading. Reading it again I'm not sure exactly what it means, especially the part about it being in the street!

In reply to SI A: A friendly atmosphere would be nice. I've been going to UCR 3 or 4 times a week for two years and I still feel bad about interrupting the 'friendly' staff from their chats to rudely pay for entry, or wait 10 minutes before someone deigns to acknowledge my presence. Competition's always a good thing.

Exactly! Maybe Manchester can support another wall, but regardless they already have 3 in the area! (MCC, Warrington, Stockport). Stoke doesn't have any.

its a little close isnt it? its about a 7 minute drive!
i think MCC is great,although i am a little bored with it now, and will leave it alone for a while.
but having 2 so close to each other can only be good for the consumer.

Even more strange it hasn't happened since:

There's a blatant need, plenty of climbers in and around Stoke
There's plenty of run down factories that could be used, and I bet they're cheap to buy too (the houses are cheap enough - I should know as I'm buying one!)
Stoke is right on the M6, so easy to access for those further afield, and it's on the way to a lot of places.

It makes sense really!

Because I work full time, I'm buying a house, I have a boyfriend, I climb 4 times a week, I paint, I swim/jog, I even socialise occasionally etc.etc. Not to mention that fact that I have no relevant experience.
