UKC

Earlier in the year the Mammut team of athletes hit the Peak District and racked up an impressive list of ascents.

The group were guided by gritstone climbing legend Johnny Dawes and the Mammut climbers were David Lama, Alex Johnson, Anna Stoehr, Jakob Schubert, Cedric Lachat and Magnus Midtboe

The trip was documented on video and in photographs, which are shown in this article.

Beautifully shot and editted, particularly liked the helicopter cam shots.

Did anyone else find the johnny Dawes interviews incredibly annoying? Rather than providing context to the climbs he seemed to need to justify something (I'm not sure what) by flagging off mountaineering, sport climbing, climbing anything but grit. I thought this ruined it, especially as one of the clips at the end made it clear that the other climbers had virtually never climbed trad and are generally sports climbers.

The need to put one form of climbing above another really annoys me and does nothing to help further the development of our sport.

Also there's too much fiddling with camera angles, focus and other fancy techniques - all of which would be great if used with a little more discipline...

Agreed, did like the little bit at the end with them trying to place gear...like a whole different world!

I quite liked the editing style for a short 10 minutes film and the Johnny Dawes bits seemed reasonable sound bites... he was obviously asked about bolting and answered.

The helicopter cam bits were great for the first three shots, but really the video was less about climbing than somebody having a laugh flying their latest toy around.
I find Johnny Dawes very wry and amusing so I enjoyed that.
More climbing, less repetitive Swedish rapping I say.
A missed opportunity I think.

Some novel camera angles from the helicopter but apart from that this was just about the worst climbing film I've ever seen - without the helicopter it would be like watching a "made for 3D" film in 2D. It's way too stylised - I guess it might be of interest to people who don't climb as it doesn't spend too long on any particluar route. See the Irish climbing film 'Underdeveloped' for how it should be done.

The photos were nice though :P

Wow, what a complete f*ck up that video was, thats got to be one of the most over edited pieces of climbing footage I've ever seen, amazing camera angles and panning ruined by overzealous editing. Someone should inform the editor that Its the rock architecture and the flow of moves thats interesting to watch.

In reply to UKC Articles: I thought it was quite good fun but it was a shame they didn't have a native speaker to check out the titles. Two language mistakes in the first twelve seconds isn't a great start, even if all the actual climbing footage is rather clever. The helicopter camera is a fantastic idea.

In reply to UKC Articles: I too hate to be a voice of positivity on a UKC forum, but I thought it was very good too. Many great images (which would have made good stand alone photos!), some neat perspectives and the mammut guys very obviously having a really good time on unfamiliar turf. Even Dawes was mostly entertaining.

I think I've worked out why Calum and co decided it was fine to dry tool on millstone, It's the only sensible way to climb chalk cliffs.

Other than that all the start stop, slow fast, random focusing shite really got in the way. I really hope the person with the helicopter cam got good crimbo presents this year so he'll be preoccupied playing with them rather than the silly helicopter. Good for the odd shot but really over done in this vid.

Crap, sexed up, over-edited, commercialised, uninspiring and un-origional (following in the footsteps of team America, who did it well). And the tune (which they played over and over again) was awful. One helicopter shot would have set the scene, 30 was a bit over the top.

The only thing that made it worth watching was Johnny's dry wit.
