Good point. I hadn't considered that. I use winter tyres and forget what it's like without.

One problem with access to Blea Water isn't just the ice on the road, its depth the snow can get to which means even 4WD or winter tyres won't get you there if you haven't got enough ground clearance.

In reply to BnB: they were probably good, but current thaw means they may not be by the time folks can get to them.

The road from Bampton has been blocked by snow drifts since Tuesday last week. Even people living in Burnbanks at the foot of Haweswater have been cut off. Having snow tyres wouldn't have helped. The road is now easier to Burnbanks, but I've no idea what it's like beyond that. But, as others have said, the icefalls will be melting now anyway.
